about
////////////
"Juye Que Se Quema" was inspired by Dominican carnival icon Raudy Torres, who became a cultural institution with his annual portrayals of exuberant folk character Robalagallina. Taking to the streets in drag and with a booming, unmistakable cackle, Raudy was a carnival centerpiece in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros for decades, cementing his legacy as one of the Dominican Republic’s most beloved pop culture figures until his passing in 2018.
Richard Villegas (singer/songwriter) was raised in Santiago, where he encountered Raudy on few but memorable occasions, and during a recent visit to the island he was delighted to find murals and a statue erected in his honor in the city center. Production from Polo Vega (Trillones) and Magio Bustillos (Magiobus, Exnovias) reflects the legend’s jovial spirit; from the song’s shimmering disco melody harkening to campy dance floor revolutions, to the non-traditional performance of traditional Dominican instruments like tambora and güira.
lyrics
Que arda el Caribe
Las caderas también
Me hierve la sangre
Traigo el ron en la piel
Hasta que
Amanezca
Tu risa pícara no estaba hecha pa olvidar
Mostrabas tus colores, me enseñaste a brillar
